Twin Fantasy - Car Seat Headrest (REVIEW)

Car Seat Headrest is an indie rock band formed by singer-songwriter Will Toledo, who had already released 6 solo albums at just 17 years old by the time their acclaimed album Twin Fantasy was released in 2011.

There are two versions of this album, the original 2011 version and the rerecorded 2018 version. Since the original version, what started out as a teen making music in the backseat of his car evolved into a full-fledged band. The reason Toledo decided to rerecord the album is to display this evolution and his own overall maturation as an artist.

While the 2011 version is the one that gained the most praise, I prefer the remake more, so that’s the one I’ll be covering in this review.

This album sounds like teenage awkwardness, and that is why it’s so charming. It’s something all of us relate/related to at one point in time. Similar to almost every other album I’ve reviewed so far, this album deals with depression, anxiety, and most importantly, relationships. Toledo is honest and raw with his lyrics. He pours his heart out to the listener while still managing to keep a catchy song structure.

Along with the relatable lyrics and themes, the instrumentals enhance the emotions that we feel course through the veins of this album and exude these emotions onto the listeners. The sounds range from soft, to loud, to just random distortion, but all of them have the same sense of comfort. They are so flawlessly done that they sometimes outdo Toledo's emotional and passionate vocals.

This album is not perfect, but it is special. It’s so awkward and raw that it allows the listener to find comfort in it because life can be awkward.

Good job Will Toledo. 8/10.
