Alex G is an American indie rock artist who has been killing it in the game since 2010. His music has become quite popular on social media in the past few months and has even started being compared to the likes of Elliott Smith. This rise in popularity mostly came from his sophomore album Trick, which happens to be my personal favorite.
Trick is quite misunderstood by a majority of the public eye, but that’s just because they don’t get it. A large critique I see when reading about this album is that it has no direction and the songs are too short, but isn’t that what’s so great about it? Alex G makes sure to give these songs just enough lyrical depth so that we are not exactly sure what he’s talking about, but we know that something is being said.
But the thin line of thematic substance only adds to the hazy and hypnotic sound that Alex G projects with his light strums on his guitar and high-pitched vocals. This album sounds like looking outside of a school bus window on a chilly autumn morning, but I feel that way with a lot of albums.
Unfortunately, after this album, Alex G decided to integrate autotune into his vocals. It doesn’t sound very good.
I like this one though. 8/10.
