“Through The Wire” is one of Kanye West’s most notorious tracks. No, it’s not because he went on some mentally ill tangent about whatever controversial babble he can come up with, it’s actually because of the story behind the track.
If you’ve heard the track before, you probably noticed that he sounds a little different on that track than he does in any of his other multi-platinum singles. This is due to a car crash he had in 2002 that nearly ended his life. The impact shattered his jaw, requiring it to be wired shut through reconstructive surgery. What West didn’t know at the time was that this crash would lead to one of his biggest hits.
The idea for the track came to West While he was recovering in the hospital. He heard Chaka Khans “Through the Fire” playing and that’s when the tune hit him. This is the sample he wanted to use for this song, and he needed to do it immediately. Just two weeks after his surgery, with his mouth still wired shut, he went to the studio. West rapped for 4 minutes about his experience with the crash while a pitched-up version of Chaka Khan's hit played in the background.
The track is now considered one of his best and most influential tracks by many. In my opinion, Through The Wire is an important piece of music history.
