Grace - Jeff Buckley (REVIEW)

Grace by Jeff Buckley is the only full-length album released by the legendary singer-songwriter before his tragic death in 1997. During its initial release, it was loved by critics but was still a complete flop due to its lack of radio play. However, the album has begun to receive lots of traction with the resurgence of the album's 7th track "Lover, You Should've Come Over" which is widely used on social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram. With this recent revival of the album, it only makes sense to give it a review.

On this record, Buckley uses strong, elegant vocals to convey his powerful message of being in love. Throughout the album, we hear his pros and cons list of being in love with someone. The title track of the album "Grace" is said by Buckley himself to be about not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love. However, in Lover, You Should've Come Over, he sings about how he feels love is pointless because he finds himself to be too immature.

Production-wise, Grace doesn't really do anything too crazy, but it doesn't need to because Jeff Buckley's voice is the real takeaway of this entire record. He has one of the most unique and beautiful voices in music and he knows it. The way he sings almost sounds boastful, but if I had a voice as angelic as him I would want to show off too so I can't really blame him. This album was meant to be sung by him and only him, I can't imagine it being done by any other vocalist.

Overall, Grace is one-of-a-kind and there will probably never be anything like it. It's incredible how someone could release an album of this quality as their debut.

Rest well, Jeff Buckley. 9/10.
